ECONOMIC AND SOCIAL COUNCIL

Dear delegates, it is an honor to welcome all of you to the Washington Academy Model of the United Nations 2016. The Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) was established in 1946 as one of the 6 main committees that originally consolidated the United Nations. Ever since its establishment, this committee’s goal is to discuss and find solutions regarding sustainable development issues. ECOSOC is characterized for being the principal body for coordination, policy review, policy dialogue and recommendations on economic, social and environmental issues, as well as for implementation of the internationally agreed development goals.

My name is David Torres and I’ll be your chair for ECOSOC during this edition of WAMUN. I’ll be accompanied by Iván Morales-Bello as your Co-Chair and Juan Andrés Tagliaferro as your secretary. As the staff members in charge of guiding you along the entire conference, we are looking forward to see your debate and public speaking skills in action, along with solid arguments and cooperative resolutions. Since 2012, I’ve been actively participating in various United Nations models, gaining knowledge and fulfilling lots of experience from different committees. My Co-Chair and Secretary both possess the same bountiful experience as I do. So in case of any doubts or problems, please don’t hesitate on contacting us via daviftv1998@gmail.com or wamun2016@gmail.com.

In this edition, members of ECOSOC will engage debate with the following topics: “ISIS’s economic impact on the Middle East and possible threats to cultural heritage” and “How Catalonia’s independence would affect the economic and social situation of the European Union”. Use these booklets as a guide or first step to know what we will be expecting from you. Nevertheless, we encourage you to take on independent research in order to achieve a more meaningful and dynamic debate.
