GENERAL ASSEMBLY

Welcome delegates to the eleventh edition of the Washington Academy Model United Nations. You will be simulating the General Assembly (also known as the GA), which is the main representative organ of the United Nations, a world forum in which all of the nations of the world have a voice and whose vote is worth exactly the same. The GA takes place during the third and last day of the conference and it is a signature feature of WAMUN, an experience that nourishes delegates by inspiring them to interact beyond the traditional committee structure. All of the delegates come together and team with countries in each committee as a unified delegation to discuss a single topic and vote for the resolution presented. As delegates, you will have to overcome your personal differences in order to properly represent your countries as a team, not individuals.

My name is Sofía Jiménez Álvarez and as the Secretary General of the model I will be serving as this year’s Chair of the General Assembly. WAMUN has always been a wonderful experience where the delegates are able to lead negotiations in an extraordinary way, with insightful research on the chosen topic. Even though this booklet will give you a summary of North Korea’s nuclear issue, we encourage you to conduct further independent research, and even though this is the last day of the model, we remind you that this debate is as important and serious as the one in the committees and it is critical for you to be involved as much as you can.

I hope this booklet helps you with the topic to be discussed and that your WAMUN experience is as rewarding as it will be for me as your Chair. If you encounter yourselves with any problems or doubts, please do not hesitate on contacting me through wamun2016@gmail.com and I will gladly assist you.

Regards,

Sofía Jiménez Álvarez

Secretary General, WAMUN XI 2016
